Public displays of prominent private collections of art ofer an informative glimpse into the collection process. While the expectation is that much formal education is required to develop an important collection around periods or genres, often a love for art and a keen eye for unique perspective is all that is required. An eye freed from pedagogy can result in refreshing choices.

Until May 29, 2009, the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland at College Park presents a remarkable opportunity to see a developing major collection, the Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African American Art, that takes fresh approaches in documenting the many expressions of African American art.

Larry and Brenda Thompson have amassed a remarkable collection of art by African Americans from around the nation. The strength of the Thompson’s collecting process is their considered attention to artists who have typically not been recognized in the traditional narratives of African American art. In addition to the acknowledged “masters,” the Thompsons have collected works by artists who have been labeled “emerging,” “unknown,” “outsider,” “eccentric,” “vernacular,” “regional” and more. The result is a collection that redefines the landscape of American art, offering a more in-depth, inclusive understanding of African American artists and their aesthetic and social concerns.

The Thompsons have not only identified and supported artists inside and outside of the canon, but they have also cultivated meaningful relationships with a variety of artists and their families that have lasted decades. The fruits of these relationships are highlighted in the exhibition Tradition Redefined: The Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African American Art.

More information about this exhibit.

This exhibit ends 5/29/2009.

Spanning 150 years are over 70 prints of African American intellectuals, artists, professionals and celebrities.

The quirky art of Dewey Crumpler remains on exhibit until May 16th at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. His work, while not easy to define, is rich in color and iconography. Many pieces tend toward organic abstraction peppered with representational references. Indeed, viewing some of his works one might wonder if Dewey Crumpler’s art was merely a magnification on canvass of organisms one might see under a microscope. But his juxtaposition of familiar shapes, color and abstract themes seem to reconnect the microscopic world to the visible world it creates. Examine his use of tulips, amoeba shapes and neon color- and draw your own conclusions!

Searles’ body of work today is best known for its expressive, celebratory use of colors and shapes to convey universal themes of lyricism and musicality. Early Searles’ works deployed more somber tones reflecting the artist’s disturbance by a racially stratified American culture. The exhibit charts the artist’s creative journey to his arrival at creating art “that feels integrated and crosses cultures.”

Six terrific exhibits end their run on March 15th at the Studio Museum in Harlem including, Barley L. Hendricks: Birth of Cool and Project Space: Shinique Smith.

Smith deconstructs the roles of canvass and traditional media through rich use of “everyday” fabric and textiles in colorful, contempletive arrangements that are as daring in composition as they are in substance.

The Hendricks exhibit is a career retrospective making its second road stop at the Studio Museum. See it at the Studio before it moves on to the Santa Monica Museum of Art (5/16-8/22) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (10/17-1/3/2010).
